Rock grates hold lava rock or ceramic briquettes above a gas grill’s burner, protecting it from drippings and vaporizing them to improve flavor. Heat plates serve the same purposes but are usually used without briquettes.
Heat plates range in style from simple broken metal angles to elaborately die-formed and perforated plates in stainless steel, porcelain coated steel, or plain carbon steel.
Some heat plates uses custom ceramic radients instead of conventional ceramic briquettes.
